National UoF Collection

Two Texas Collections:
In Texas, there are two independent collections: (1) State Mandated reporting to the Attorney General's Office (OAG) and (2) National Use of Force (UoF) Collection to the FBI.

Although they are separate collections, some data elements collected do overlap. The National UoF Collection captures more detail and provides a clearer picture of these events, allowing for better analysis. Click here for more information.

National UoF Program:

The TXDPS UoF Program works closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) National Use of Force Data Collection Program. This partnership includes the promotion of agency participation in monthly reporting of use-of-force submissions.

Data collected:  Per the FBI UoF Guidelines this collection includes:

  1. Death in connection to use of force by Law Enforcement Officer (LEO).
  2. Serious bodily injury(ies) in connection with use of force by LEO.
  3. Firearm discharged by LEO at or in the direction of a person, without injury or death.

Program:

  1. This is a national program established by the FBI.
  2. TXDPS manages the Texas collection through the state-level Texas Use of Force (UoF) portal.
    • The data is forwarded to the federal level.
  3. Agencies can view their data at the Federal level via their ‘read-only’ UoF user account (on LEEP).

Note: This data collection is separate from the State Mandated Reporting to OAG.
