Ignition Interlock Devices

October 20, 2020

A restricted interlock license authorizes you to operate a motor vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device (IID). When the Department receives a court order restricting your ability to operate a motor vehicle equipped with an IID, your driving privilege will be cancelled unless an IID is obtained and installed on your vehicle and/or any vehicle you use, and restricted interlock license is obtained. The cancellation takes effect on the 30th day from the date the Department provides you with notice.

To obtain a restricted interlock license, you must comply with the following:

  1. Your Texas driver license must not be expired
  2. Your Texas driver license must not be suspended, revoked, cancelled, or denied for any other reason
  3. You must submit the restricted interlock license fee
  4. Pay all outstanding Reinstatement fees

The reinstatement and the Ignition Interlock license fees can be paid online on the License Eligibility page or submitted to the Department by mail.  If paying your fees by mail, you may send a check or money order to the following address for processing:

Texas Department of Public Safety
ATTN Central Cash Receiving
PO BOX 15999
Austin, Texas 78761

You must include your name, date of birth and driver license number on all documents so your driver record can be properly identified. Once the Department has received your request for an interlock license, including all necessary payments, please allow approximately 21 business days for processing.

Ignition Interlock Device Installation

All court-ordered installations of ignition interlock devices must be performed by Department-certified service centers. The Regulatory Services Division of the Department certifies locations that can install and service the devices.

Removal of Ignition Interlock Device

The ignition interlock can only be removed upon receipt of a court order with a court seal or vendor removal form signed by a judge or county clerk. To have the ignition interlock requirement removed from your driver license, submit the necessary documentation to the Department by mail, email, or fax.  Include your full name, date of birth and driver license number on all documents submitted and include a copy of your suspension notice, if available, so your driver record can be properly identified. Please allow approximately 21 business days for processing.
