National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS)
In 2009 the Department was required to establish a procedure to provide federal prohibited person information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for use with the National Instant Criminal Background Check system (NICS). HB 3352 created Government Code 411.052 and 411.0521 and Health and Safety Code 574.088 to establish Mental Health NICS reporting for Texas Courts. Online transactions submitted via the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Site are forwarded to the NICS Indices.
