My 16 year old nephew and I were in the DPS office to apply for his driver license. Pat was the DPS representative that assisted us. As she processed our paperwork she began talking with my nephew about his preparedness for operating a vehicle and driving with others on the road. Primarily, it was her emphasis on the responsibility my nephew was taken on that created a heightened sense of awareness about driving safety for himself and for others for my nephew. She explained to him that driving safely requires him to be knowledgeable about driver safety, attentive to traffic and road rules/signs and to perform skills he learned successfully when driving a vehicle. She used our encounter with her at the DPS office as a teaching moment for my nephew, and as a concerned parent that can probably sound like a nagging parent to my nephew, my husband and I are thankful that she reiterated for us, in a caring way, that getting a driver license and driving is a privilege and should be undertaken with caution. Having her as our DPS assister was a memorable experience for my nephew and I.
