Trooper Joseph Hernandez (THP)

November 20, 2020

I wanted to apprise you of an incident involving Trooper Joseph E. Hernandez. As my daughter and I were driving back from a business trip, we had a flat tire about 10 miles out of Falfurrias. I immediately called Triple A, and arrangements were made for a wrecker service to come out and assist us. As you can imagine, it took almost an hour for them to arrive, and my daughter and I were a tad nervous because the two-lane highway does not allow a lot of room for a disabled vehicle on the side of the road. Shortly before the wrecker service arrived, Trooper Hernandez was on his way home from work, but he stopped by and offered to change the tire for us. When we explained that we were expecting the wrecker service shortly, he offered to go home (which was a few yards up the road) and get a pump that could temporarily fix the tire so that we could move safely out of the way. Almost as soon as he left to get the air pump, the wrecker service arrived. When Trooper Hernandez returned, he stayed there, and he helped the gentleman because changing the tire was a little more complicated than first anticipated. Even though Trooper Hernandez could have gone home the minute we said we had assistance on the way, he stayed not only to ensure that we were safe, but also to help. He did this despite the fact that the heat was scorching down on us, and he did it all with a smile. In this day and age where many are calling on our government to defund law enforcement, I am very grateful for young men like him who have obviously taken their promise to serve and protect very seriously. Both my daughter and I were so impressed by him that I felt it was important to share this with you, too. Thank you for your time and attention.
