Texas Rangers Special Operations Group

Ranger Since 2012
The Texas Rangers Special Operations Group is made up of specialized teams that operate on a full-time basis and are located within each of the DPS Regions statewide, which encompass the 254 counties in Texas. SOG is there to lend support to local departments that may not have a team capable of addressing a threat to the public or may be called to support other teams with extended operations or large-scale operations. SOG is comprised of Staff Sergeants, Texas Rangers, and EMTs / Paramedics within the Texas Ranger Division. These specialized teams provide the Department with increased police capability to effectively control and resolve highly volatile situations. The specialized equipment and training of these teams ensure greater safety for everyone involved. The Department of Public Safety uses these specialized teams in situations that warrant the need for advanced weapons, tactics, and training. Law enforcement has continued to evolve since its inception and has established that there are police demands that require specialized units equipped and trained to successfully handle those critical demands. The mission of these highly trained and specially equipped teams is to bring extremely volatile situations under control. This includes dealing with armed individuals, barricaded subjects/or hostage situations, and high-risk warrant service operations.
SOG also plays a vital role in border security by conducting rural tactical operations/missions along the Texas and Mexico border. Border operations are carried out in remote/austere areas where conventional law enforcement cannot operate, to prioritize public safety, interdict criminal or terrorist organizations, and enhance criminal investigations and prosecutions in these areas that are commonly exploited by the criminal element. Routinely, SOG conducts operations with the US Border Patrol, DEA, DHS, the Department of Public Safety Aircraft Operations Division, and the Texas National Guard’s Counter Drug Taskforce Unit. SOG is also an effective tool in furthering interagency cooperation with local, state, and federal agencies related to homeland security.
SOG routinely conducts executive protection, from the Governor of Texas to the President of the United States, we are called upon to provide a more heightened and vigilant approach towards this function in protecting our elected officials. SOG also assists in protecting citizens with large-scale events, from rallies to the Super Bowls we’ve had in Texas, SOG has deployed to lend its support to local officials. SOG has also been involved in humanitarian efforts to rescue private citizens during catastrophic storms and disasters. Our highly trained personnel and our specialized equipment have allowed us to reach individuals during these unfortunate incidents, evacuate them, and provide an advanced level of care to ensure their safety.
Thank you for your interest in learning about the Texas Ranger Division. SOG stands ready to serve to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.
