Corporal Jose Luis Olguin Jr.

October 4, 2021

Several weeks ago, my car caught fire and burned off Exit 222 on Interstate 10. My family and I were left standing in the brush off to the side of the interstate as we watched our car and many of our possessions burn to the ground. With my wife, five-year old, two-year old, and German Shepherd—we were in a bad spot. Trooper Jose Luis Olguin Jr was either the first or second on the scene—the details are a little foggy. One thing I clearly remember is my two-year old daughter had her backpack full of toys and stuffed animals burned in the fire. As you can imagine, she was upset about losing the toys and stuffed animals she brought with her on the trip. Seeing this, Trooper Olguin went into his trunk and got her a teddy bear that she tightly clutched for the next hour. Even two weeks after the fire she still loves that teddy bear. Trooper Olguin then helped my family navigate what to do next, took care of all the reports, called the tow truck company, and much more. His professionalism, expertise, and compassion made a difficult situation easier to manage. As we waited for the tow truck to take the car away, Trooper Olguin went through the ash remains of the car in search for any of our personal possessions that might have made it. I told him my wife’s wedding ring was somewhere in the ashes in what used to be the front seat floorboard. Learning this, Trooper Olguin vigorously searched the car for the ring, getting ash and soot all over his uniform in the process. He must have searched for a solid half hour. Even though we didn’t find the ring, I sincerely appreciate the effort Trooper Olguin made to find the ring. He knew it was the most important item in the ash, and he put out maximum effort to find it. Once the tow truck came and took the car away, Trooper Olguin drove me and my dog to the nearest town where we met up with my wife and kids who went with another officer. The whole time, Trooper Olguin was professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. As tough as it was to have my car burn down on the interstate, I am very thankful that Trooper Olguin was one of the first on the scene to help us through a difficult and unexpected situation. Thank you Trooper Olguin, I really appreciate all the help you gave me and my family during a very difficult time. With Gratitude and Appreciation.
