Section 6: Reporting an Error on a driver license or identification card

November 18, 2020

1. I paid for a renewal, but when I received my new license the expiration date did not change. How can I get this corrected?

To report an error on your driver license, email DriverLicenseErrors@dps.texas.gov. Provide a brief explanation of the error along with your contact information.  We will respond within 2 to 3 business days.

2. There is an error (height, gender, date of birth, eye color, spelling of name/address etc.) on my driver license or identification card. How can I get this information corrected?

To report an error on your driver license, email DriverLicenseErrors@dps.texas.gov. Provide a brief explanation of the error along with your contact information.  We will respond within 2 to 3 business days.

3. My license says that I am an organ donor even though that is not what I selected on my driver license application. How can I get this information corrected?

To report an error on your driver license, email DriverLicenseErrors@dps.texas.gov. Provide a brief explanation of the error along with your contact information.  We will respond within 2 to 3 business days.

Removing the organ donor designation from your DL or ID does not automatically withdraw you for the state registry.  To officially remove your name, you must log in to Donate Life Texas and update your registration status directly.

4. How do I get a new photo on my driver license or identification card?

To update your photo, an in-office appointment is required.  The fee for a duplicate is $11.

The Department offers all in-office driver license and identification card services by appointment only. Appointments may be scheduled through Texas Scheduler up to 180 days in advance.

5. I just received my card in the mail, and it has my name but someone else's photo on it. How can I get this corrected?

To report an error on your driver license; email DriverLicenseErrors@dps.texas.gov. Provide a brief explanation of the error along with your contact information.  We will respond within 2 to 3 business days.

6. I am no longer required to register in the Texas Sex Offender Registration Program. How can I get this information updated on my driver record?

In Texas, all sex offender registrations must be completed with your local law enforcement authority.

  • Your local law enforcement authority that required you to register must contact Crime Records at:

Texas Department of Public Safety

Attn: Crime Records

PO Box 4087

Austin, Texas 78773

  • Crime Records will determine if you are no longer required to register. Crime Records will then notify the Driver Services to have the information removed from your driver record. For more detailed information and frequently asked questions about the registration process, please visit the Department's official webpage:  Texas Sex Offender Registration Program

7. I received my Limited Term License in the mail, and I do not think the expiration date is correct. What do I need to do?

The expiration date on your Limited Term DL or ID is the response received from the U.S.  Department of Homeland Security based on your lawful presence documentation.

If you believe these dates are incorrect, or if you have additional documentation to provide that extends your lawful presence status, you must visit your local driver license office.

The Department offers all in-office driver license and identification card services by appointment only. Appointments may be scheduled through Texas Scheduler up to 180 days in advance.

8. I still cannot find the answer to my question, what do I do?
