DHS Adds Houston to “Securing the Cities” Program

AUSTIN – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday announced the expansion of their Domestic Nuclear Detection Office’s “Securing the Cities” program to now include Houston and Chicago. “Securing the Cities” is a federal program designed to help detect radiological and nuclear threats and protect major metropolitan areas against terrorist attacks.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw released the following statement regarding the announcement:

“We are pleased that the Department of Homeland Security has made the significant decision to include Houston in the Securing the Cities program, which offers state and local agencies vital resources to help prepare in protecting against radiological or nuclear terrorist attacks.

“We applaud DHS’ vigilant and continued efforts to keep our communities safe through this program, and because of Texas’ vast size, large population and critical infrastructure, we encourage DHS to consider including other major metropolitan areas in Texas as the program expands in the future.”
