DPS Assisting in Willacy County Incident

February 19, 2015

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is continuing to provide significant resources to assist federal and local authorities related to the ongoing disturbance at the Willacy County Correctional Center, which houses federal detainees.

DPS is one of several federal, state and local agencies participating in a Command Center set up at the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office, and continues to assist in securing the perimeter. DPS assets participating include Texas Highway Patrol troopers, Criminal Investigation Division agents, Texas Rangers, Aviation and the Special Response Team. DPS is working closely with Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence and other law enforcement partners.

State leadership is being kept updated on this incident.

“Our office is being updated on the current situation by DPS. The State of Texas continues to monitor and provide any necessary resources and assistance to our federal and local partners in this ongoing situation,” said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is currently serving as acting-governor.
