Highway Patrol Trooper Terry Wayne Miller
January 14, 1997 - October 12, 1999
Miller, 37, was shot and killed October 12, 1999 as he responded to the scene of a phony 911 call near Pleasanton in Atascosa County. Two Atascosa sheriff's deputies also were killed and two other people were wounded in the ambush. The gunman shot and killed himself. Miller graduated from the DPS Academy in July 1997 and was stationed at the Highway Patrol office in Freer. He transferred to Pleasanton in September 1998. He was born in Mercedes and graduated from Gregory-Portland High School. In 1987, he became a Sinton police officer. He served as a deputy sheriff in San Patricio County from 1989 until he began his career with DPS. Miller is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 13 and 1. Trooper Terry Miller is the 218th DPS officer to be killed in the line of duty.
