The mission of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Training Operations Division (TOD) is to prepare law enforcement leaders and peace officers to meet 21st century demands and challenges. To this end, TOD develops a wide variety of world-class training and education programs and delivers them to public safety professionals within the department and throughout the state.
Recruiting and Trooper Training
Recruiting and Trooper Training
The Texas Department of Public Safety is committed to recruiting and training a diverse workforce that reflect our values of Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork. Prospective Texas State Troopers must complete the rigorous Texas DPS Basic Peace Officer Course, which exceeds mandatory licensing requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Trooper Trainees are educated by experts on criminal and traffic law enforcement, crash investigation, crisis intervention, use of force, emergency casualty care, criminal investigations, communications, cultural diversity, fitness and wellness, and many other areas, gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the job of a Highway Patrol Trooper anywhere in Texas.
Interdiction for the Protection of Children
Interdiction for the Protection of Children
The Interdiction for the Protection of Children (IPC) program equips law enforcement officers with the tools to recognize indicators of missing, exploited, at-risk, and endangered children. All Texas Highway Patrol Troopers receive IPC training. Since the program’s beginning in 2009, Troopers have rescued more than 500 children, arresting suspects for human trafficking and related crimes. In addition, the Texas Department of Public Safety uses a multidisciplinary approach to train law enforcement officers, prosecutors, criminal analysts, and personnel from child protective services, victim services, and child advocacy organizations on IPC. Since 2009, DPS has trained over 10,000 professionals in Texas, across the nation, and around the world. Through the continued support of a wide range of governmental and non-governmental partners, the IPC program continues to provide life-saving skills, advocating a proactive message: "Stop Waiting for Children to Ask for Your Help."
